Coverage Area

The strength of the signal outside the machine, measured where the antenna will mount, decides how far the boosted signal reaches inside. In a side by side the inside antenna sits within 36 inches of the phones, so the practical question is whether the phones in the cab are covered, and these are the general estimates:

• Strong (5 bars): the whole cab
• Medium (3 to 4 bars): a few feet from the inside antenna
• Weak (1 to 2 bars): about 18 inches from the inside antenna
• None (0 bars): no coverage, since there is nothing to boost

Many factors change the size of the inside coverage area, so actual results vary from these estimates.

Before you use it, register the booster with your carrier. Every major US carrier consents to boosters certified to the current FCC rules, and registration is a short form on the carrier's website.

Please note: this booster will not work in most European, Asian, and African countries because the frequencies used there are different from the ones it boosts.

Installation

The SxS is a DIY installation, and the work is in deciding where two things ride: the antenna on the cage and the enclosure on the machine. The outside antenna has to stand upright, since the system only runs properly with the antenna vertical, and it works best above the roof and the cage. The enclosure needs a spot you can reach the 12 volt outlet from.

The steps

• Assemble the antenna: feed the cable through the 13 inch mast and the side exit adapter, then thread the mast, adapter, spring, and the socket half of the quick release together with thread locker on each metal thread and none on the plastic antenna body
• Mount the clamp: fit the right rubber insert, close the clamp on the bar, set the geared bracket so the antenna stands straight, bolt the quick release stud through the bracket, and click the antenna on
• Mount the enclosure: Velcro the amplifier inside, then fix the enclosure to a cage bar with the rubber strips and pole mount brackets, or to a flat surface with the wide Velcro strips or the threaded base holes
• Connect the antenna: bring the cable in through a gland to the outside antenna port, directly with the SMA adapter if the enclosure is next to the antenna, or through the 2 ft or 10 ft cable if not
• Mount the inside antenna: Velcro it to the dash or the seat side within 36 inches of the phones, and bring its cable in through the second gland. Both antennas have to stay at least 8 inches from any person
• Power it: run the power cord through the last gland to the 12 volt port, plug into the machine's 12 volt outlet, switch on, and confirm a solid green light. Tighten the glands by hand and latch the lid.
• Parking: if the machine's 12 volt outlet stays live with the key off and the machine will sit for more than a day, switch the booster off at the cord so it does not draw the battery down

Alternatives and accessories

• Existing 3/8-24 spring base: the quick release stud threads straight onto it, and the clamp is not needed
• Existing whip light mount hole: the quick release stud drops through the hole and a nut secures it underneath
• Rocker Switch Hardwire Kit 850053: replaces the 12 volt plug with a fused connection to the battery or a switched accessory circuit and a dash mounted switch. We do not stock it today, so call before you order and we can tell you where it stands
• 18 inch mast extension 991129: lifts the antenna higher over a roof or a light bar
• 18 ft LMR-195 cable 952315: only for an enclosure mounted so far from the antenna that the included 10 ft cable cannot reach, since the shorter cable is better whenever it will do the job

If the light on the amplifier turns red, the two antennas are too close to each other. Move the inside antenna farther from the outside antenna and power cycle the booster.
